Golfers are gear heads, equipment nerds and endless tinkerers, so when one of those late-night infomercials comes on promising instant results after having a few drinks, we listen a little more intently and have a tendency to get a little click-happy online. That’s where our Late Night Online Purchases franchise comes in, a review of a certain piece of equipment, training aid or something else that caught our eye.
The club-fitting revolution has taken hold among golfers. Gone are the days when serious players simply buy their clubs off of the rack, so why should your golf ball be any different? That’s the question that Bridgestone Golf has been asking for 10 years now. The inventors of ball fitting, Bridgestone has released their next era of technology that will give golf junkies their fix anywhere, any time and all you need is a smartphone.

The Bridgestone BFIT Ball Fitting Launch Monitor App takes technology that Bridgestone has been developing for years and puts it straight into your smartphone so that you can get fit to the perfect golf ball for you by using the world’s first free launch monitor. That’s right, it’s a launch monitor and it’s free.
Here’s how the app came to be, via MyGolfSpy.com’s review.
“We have the cameras over in R&D that can capture golf swing at impact,” says Bridgestone Golf Ball Marketing Manager Adam Rehberg. “But we had to wait for phone technology to catch up. We got the new iPhone 6 a couple of years ago, that’s when our eyes started lighting up, and we said okay, we’re ready to bring this to the market.”
The app requires a camera capable of capturing at least 240 frames per second, so that’s iPhone 6 or better.
The app requires you to record a few swings, which you will likely need a friend to do for you. From there, you follow the app’s step by step instructions, which will have you pinpoint various spots during the swing, and tell it what kind of ball flight you had. After that, Bridgestone’s algorithm can spit out swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin and carry distance.
Not only will you find out which Bridgestone golf ball is right for you, but you’ll also get a peek behind the curtain at “the numbers” you hear the pros talk about when they’re hitting shots on their $20,000 Trackmans, except this launch monitor is free.
The BFIT app is available for iOS devices in the Apple App Store currently. The Android version will be released shortly.
